Whirlpool appliance repair by Sagonaska

Whirlpool has been in Belleville kitchens for decades, so we work on everything from a two-year-old front loader to a twenty-year-old top load washer still going strong. The parts that fail on these machines ride with us, and every repair carries a 90-day warranty.

Whirlpool playing up? We can usually be there today.

Common issues

Whirlpool faults Sagonaska technicians see every week

Pick the appliance to see what usually goes wrong on a Whirlpool, and what is worth trying before you book a visit.

Fridge warm, freezer still cold

On Whirlpool side-by-side and French door models this is almost always airflow. The evaporator fan stops or the defrost system quits, frost builds on the coil and the fridge gets nothing.

Try first: Hold the door switch in and listen for the fan. Silence, or a fan that runs and stops, means the fault is behind the rear panel.

Ice maker cubes fuse into a block

Whirlpool in-door ice makers suffer when the fill tube frosts or the tray heater fails, and the auger jams against the slab.

Try first: Empty the bin completely and run it for a day. A solid slab coming back means the fill tube or module needs replacing.

Water on the floor at the front

The defrost drain ices up at the same spot every time, so meltwater runs forward under the drawers instead of into the pan.

Try first: Pull the bottom drawer, look for ice at the back of the freezer floor and pour warm water down the drain hole.

Recent repair, Downtown Belleville

Whirlpool fridge repair

A Whirlpool side-by-side kept the freezer rock solid while the fridge sat at room temperature. Defrosting it overnight bought two good days each time.

Diagnosis and fix

Evaporator fan and defrost thermostat replaced

The fan had failed and the thermostat was stuck open, so ice kept rebuilding on the coil. Both replaced in one visit and the fridge held 3 degrees by evening. Covered by the 90-day warranty.

Top loader fills but will not turn

On Whirlpool vertical modular washers the shift actuator is the classic failure. The motor runs, the basket sits still and the cycle times out.

Try first: Start a spin cycle and listen. A soft click with a humming motor and a still drum is the actuator.

Lid will not lock, cycle will not start

The lid lock assembly wears out and the machine refuses to run without confirmation that the lid is down.

Try first: Press the lid firmly and start again. If it runs while held, replace the lock rather than bypassing it.

F5 E2 or F7 E1 on the display

F5 E2 means the lid lock did not engage, F7 E1 is a motor speed fault. Both stop the wash before it gets going.

Try first: Unplug for two minutes and run rinse and spin. Write the code down exactly, it decides which part we bring.

Whirlpool washer repair

A Whirlpool top loader filled, hummed and then drained without ever washing. Different cycles and a reset gave the same result each time.

Diagnosis and fix

Shift actuator replaced

The actuator had failed, so the transmission never engaged the basket. Replaced on the first visit and tested through a full wash and spin. Covered by the 90-day warranty.

Runs with no heat at all

On electric models it is usually the element or the thermal cut-off, and both often fail because of a restricted vent. Gas models point at the igniter or coils.

Try first: Check both halves of the breaker first, then the vent hood outside, before replacing any part.

Thumping that matches the drum

Whirlpool dryers run the drum on a belt with an idler pulley and two rear rollers. A flat spot thumps once per rotation.

Try first: Run it empty. A thump with nothing inside is mechanical and worth fixing before the shaft wears.

AF, or a cycle that never finishes

AF is the restricted airflow warning. The machine keeps running to try to finish, so a load takes two hours and the cabinet gets very hot.

Try first: Disconnect the duct at the back and run it briefly. Strong air at the machine means the wall duct is blocked.

Recent repair, Trenton

Whirlpool dryer repair

A Whirlpool dryer needed two full cycles for a normal load and the laundry room was getting uncomfortably warm. No codes showed.

Diagnosis and fix

Heating element and vent duct

The element had partly failed and the wall duct was two thirds blocked with lint. We did both, because a new element in a blocked system fails again. Covered by the 90-day warranty.

Water standing in the bottom

Whirlpool dishwashers with the chopper style filter block at the sump, and the check valve sticks with age.

Try first: Scoop the water out, lift the filter and rinse it. Draining cleanly afterwards means monthly cleaning is the fix.

Buttons work but nothing starts

The door latch switch is the usual suspect. The door feels shut and the control lights up, but the machine never gets confirmation.

Try first: Start a cycle while pressing the door firmly closed. If that works, replace the latch, not the board.

Top rack still dirty

Scale narrows the spray arm nozzles and the upper arm feed blocks where it enters the rack.

Try first: Take the arms off, clear each hole with a toothpick and check the feed tube at the back.

Recent repair, Quinte West

Whirlpool dishwasher repair

A Whirlpool dishwasher was leaving the top rack dirty even on the heaviest cycle. The filter was clean and three detergents had been tried.

Diagnosis and fix

Upper spray arm feed cleared

The feed tube to the upper arm was almost completely blocked with scale, so the top rack got a trickle. Tube and nozzles cleared, pump pressure tested. Covered by the 90-day warranty.

Element only works on high

That is the infinite switch behind the knob, not the element. It has welded closed, so the burner gets full power whenever it is on.

Try first: Stop using that burner until it is repaired. An element stuck on full is a real fire risk.

Coil element arcs at the plug

On coil ranges the receptacle the element plugs into overheats and chars. The element looks fine, the contact behind it is gone.

Try first: Unplug the range and look at the block. Any browning means the receptacle is replaced with the element.

F2 E0 or a panel that beeps by itself

A stuck key on the membrane panel, common once the touch surface starts to lift.

Try first: Cut the breaker for five minutes. Beeping returning within days means the membrane needs replacing.

Recent repair, Shannonville

Whirlpool range repair

A Whirlpool coil range had the large rear element glowing red the moment it was switched on, with no control from the knob at all.

Diagnosis and fix

Infinite switch and receptacle replaced

The switch had welded closed and the receptacle behind the element was browned from the heat. Both replaced and all four elements tested. Covered by the 90-day warranty.

Oven will not heat, broil works

The bake element has failed. The giveaway is that the broil element at the top still glows while nothing happens below.

Try first: Set 350 and look inside after ten minutes. A dark lower element with a glowing top one is the answer.

Temperature drifts off the setting

The oven sensor ages and reads low, so the control keeps heating. A 30 to 50 degree gap is typical before anyone notices.

Try first: Check with an oven thermometer at 350 for twenty minutes. A small gap can be trimmed in calibration.

Oven cuts out partway through baking

A failing thermal fuse or a charred terminal block at the back where the range cord lands.

Try first: Note whether it cuts out at a set time or a set temperature. That difference separates a fuse from a wiring fault.

Recent repair, Brighton

Whirlpool oven repair

A Whirlpool range cut out about forty minutes into any bake and would not restart until it cooled. No error code at any point.

Diagnosis and fix

Charred terminal block replaced

The block where the range cord lands had overheated and one connection was arcing under load. Block and cord tail replaced, then an hour at 400 as a test. Covered by the 90-day warranty.
