Maytag appliance repair by Sagonaska

Maytag built its name on machines that keep going, and plenty of them around Belleville are well past ten years old. That is exactly the age where a shift actuator, a bearing or a bake element decides to quit, and those are the parts we carry.

Maytag playing up? We can usually be there today.

Common issues

Maytag faults Sagonaska technicians see every week

Pick the appliance to see what usually goes wrong on a Maytag, and what is worth trying before you book a visit.

Bravos or Centennial will not spin

The shift actuator on these top loaders is the single most common Maytag repair we do. The motor runs, the basket does not, and the load finishes soaking wet.

Try first: Run a spin only cycle. A click, then a motor humming with a still basket, is the actuator almost every time.

Loud roar during spin

Tub bearings. The noise starts as a hum on high spin and grows into something you can hear from another room over a few months.

Try first: Spin an empty drum and listen. A roar that rises with speed means bearings, and the sooner it is looked at the less of the machine it takes with it.

Lid lock flashing, cycle will not start

The lid lock assembly fails or the strike gets bent, and the machine will not fill until it knows the lid is latched.

Try first: Press the lid firmly and restart. If it runs under pressure, replace the lock and do not try to defeat it.

Recent repair, West Park Village, Belleville

Maytag washer repair

A Maytag Bravos was finishing every cycle with the load still dripping. The owner had been running an extra spin each time with no difference.

Diagnosis and fix

Shift actuator replaced

The actuator had failed, so the transmission never switched into spin. Replaced on the first visit and tested through wash, drain and two spin speeds. Covered by the 90-day warranty.

Drum turns, no heat

The heating element or the thermal fuse, and on Maytag both usually go for the same reason: a duct that has not been cleared in years.

Try first: Check both breaker legs, then the vent outside. Clear the duct before any part goes in.

Squeal that fades as it warms

A glazed belt or a dry idler pulley. Maytag dryers squeal loudest for the first few minutes, which is why people put up with it.

Try first: Run it empty and listen from the side. A squeal that eases after five minutes is the belt or idler.

Clothes come out too hot

Restricted airflow or a failed cycling thermostat. The load scorches at the edges while the middle stays damp.

Try first: Stop using it until it is checked. Overheating stresses the drum seals and the wiring.

Recent repair, Quinte West

Maytag dryer repair

A Maytag dryer was taking well over two hours per load and the laundry room smelled hot. No error was displayed and the drum turned normally.

Diagnosis and fix

Cycling thermostat replaced, duct cleared

The thermostat had failed and the wall duct was heavily restricted, which is what killed it. Duct cleared, thermostat replaced and exhaust temperature measured. Covered by the 90-day warranty.

Fridge side warming, freezer fine

Airflow or defrost. The evaporator fan or the defrost thermostat fails, ice packs the coil and the fridge compartment stops getting cold air.

Try first: Listen for the fan with the freezer door switch held in. Silence means the fault is behind the panel.

Hollow or small ice cubes

A partly blocked water line or a tired inlet valve. Hard water leaves scale in the valve screen and the fill volume drops off slowly.

Try first: Change the water filter first, then time a fill. A tray that never fills properly with a new filter means the valve.

Cabinet warm and never resting

Dirty coils, a weak door seal or a failing start relay. On older Maytag units the relay is a common, inexpensive failure that mimics a dead compressor.

Try first: Vacuum the coils and check the gasket with a sheet of paper.

Recent repair, Cannifton

Maytag fridge repair

A Maytag French door kept cycling on and off every few minutes with a clicking sound, and the fresh food side was slowly warming.

Diagnosis and fix

Start relay replaced

The relay had failed, so the compressor tried to start and dropped out each time. Relay and overload replaced and the fridge ran properly within the hour. Covered by the 90-day warranty.

Standing water after every cycle

Blocked filter, a stuck check valve or a tired drain pump. Models with the chopper design silt up at the sump if the filter is never pulled.

Try first: Lift the filter out and rinse it, then run a rinse cycle.

Detergent cup stays shut

The wax motor or the release mechanism sticks with detergent residue, so the tablet is still in the cup at the end.

Try first: Clean around the cup and the latch with hot water. Still not releasing means the wax motor.

Gritty film on the dishes

Spray arm nozzles narrowed by scale and a filter that needs a proper clean. Hard water makes this routine rather than rare.

Try first: Clear each nozzle with a toothpick and run a hot empty cycle with dishwasher cleaner.

Recent repair, Stirling

Maytag dishwasher repair

A Maytag dishwasher was leaving the detergent tablet in the cup at the end of every wash, so nothing was getting properly cleaned.

Diagnosis and fix

Dispenser wax motor replaced

The wax motor had failed and the cup never opened. Replaced, residue cleaned from the latch and a cycle run to confirm the release. Covered by the 90-day warranty.

Element heats only at full power

The infinite switch has welded closed. The element itself is usually fine, but the burner is stuck at maximum whenever it is on.

Try first: Stop using that burner. A switch stuck closed is a fire risk and the part costs far less than the damage.

Coil element sparks at the plug

The receptacle behind the element has burnt. It is the contact, not the element, and running it that way risks the wiring.

Try first: Unplug the range and look at the block the element seats into.

Display dark but burners work

The control board or its transformer on electronic models. Surface burners often run independently of the board.

Try first: Cut the breaker for five minutes. A display that stays dark needs the board tested.

Recent repair, Point Anne

Maytag range repair

A Maytag range had a working cooktop and a completely dark control panel, so the oven could not be used at all.

Diagnosis and fix

Control board transformer replaced

The low voltage transformer feeding the control had failed, leaving the board dead while the burners carried on. Replaced and a full test bake run. Covered by the 90-day warranty.

Oven heats slowly or not at all

The bake element on electric models, the igniter on gas. A gas igniter glows but weakens with age until it can no longer open the valve.

Try first: For gas, watch the igniter through the vent. Glowing for more than 90 seconds without a flame means it is done.

Baking unevenly front to back

A drifted oven sensor or a door that no longer seals flat. Both push the real temperature away from the display.

Try first: Check with an oven thermometer at 350 for twenty minutes, then feel around the closed door for escaping heat.

Self-clean left the oven dead

The high heat of a clean cycle takes out thermal fuses and sometimes the control board. It is the most common reason a working oven suddenly stops.

Try first: If the oven died after a clean cycle, say so when you book. It points us straight at the fuse and the board.

Recent repair, Corbyville

Maytag oven repair

A Maytag range was completely dead after a self-clean cycle run the night before a family dinner. No display, no heat, breaker not tripped.

Diagnosis and fix

Thermal fuse replaced

The self-clean heat had opened the thermal fuse, which is what it is designed to do. Replaced, door latch and sensor checked, normal bake confirmed. Covered by the 90-day warranty.
